2011-September-6: Day 22

Yesterday: Went to a Labor Day barbeque deal in Lamy, then picked up a couch and drove it down to 'burque. Sara and I picked up some frozen creme brulees, English toffee, and a superb sweet white wine entitled Moscato at Trader Joe's. All three were quite good. Went to a little show at Gold House, aka someone's house on Gold Ave and spent most of my mental energy studying the various kidlets. First (and loudest) was this wasted guy who was way too big to kick out; he started the evening out in the driveway (the show was late getting underway, so most people were in the yard or driveway), obviously drunk but not ornery, just asking around for more beers. Now, the fact that he was asking for more booze when obviously already wasted was funny enough, but he was trying to skeez a brew off this kid who really didn't want to give it to him, claiming it was his only beer and he really wanted it: the juxtaposition between the drunkard knowing and saying what he wanted without trepidation and the trembly sober kid trying to be polite about the whole thing was fantastic. So we finally go in and this guy is basically just doing one-man recordings in front of us ("ambience"), playing a drum beat, recording it, playing the loop, then recording a shaker over it, some chords, a little lead guitar, some voice crap, and maybe singing under the complete muddle of it all lastly. Fine, interesting. But the night really got going when one Drunky McDrunkster, who had already been singing along, decided to plop himself down by the drum machine and start piddling his fingers over the pads. The musician at first tried to ignore him, then stop him, then realized the futility of it all and tried to build off of the loop he had recorded of the drunk guy's rhythmless exploits. To no avail, unfortunately; so he called it a night and I'm pretty sure the drunk guy left slash passed out somewhere. The next act was a woman who knew how to sing and played some pretty fun songs, but her bass player was the real revelation... Anyway, around this time I noticed a young lady who seemed a bit less "counterculture" than the rest slash the whole Albuquerque/New Mexico youth scene. She seemed more conscious and less self-conscious; not afraid to admit she was trying. More California/L.A. perhaps. Watching the interactions between these two differing mentalities/outlooks was somewhat intriguing and somewhat reminiscent. Watching the heads of the audience as they passively glanced around, tallying the bobs and calculating when to begin head-nodding and at what tempo and/or ferocity to bob said heads got me thinking (about thinking). Was the girl who first decided to start all-out dancing, before anyone else was even slightly grooving, in a state of elevated mental freedom? Was she aware of her actions and surroundings and decided there were no repercussions of note, so she should do as she felt and she felt like dancing? Was she trying to garner attention? Was she just drunk? Was she absent or genius? aware? aloof? perceptive? deceptive? calculating? etc. etc. etc.

Then the bass player switched to the lead, singing and playing guitar without any background, neither electronic nor human, and he was quite good. He had a nice (and unexpectedly high) voice, decent guitar technique, very good lyrics, and quite intelligent song writing/structuring/arranging. I was very pleasantly surprised. After he finished there was another break in which the hooligans pow-wowed outside while an actual band (complete with 5-piece drum kit!) set up. They were fun, loud, and predictable, and after a few songs we left and I slept on the afore-mentioned couch!

Sweet!

Fun with hair (and by "fun" I mean "gross")

Fun with hair: Antonio

Today: I woke up, drove the dualie down to Los Lunas so the mechanics could try to figure out why it was having trouble starting in the cold (of course they found nothing amiss), drove back up to Santa Fe, had a bite to eat at O.G. Second Street, back to la casa to watch US v Belgium and relax (feeling quite tired for some reason). After some relaxation we indulged in a scrumptious linguini with shrimp in a delicious lemony sauce accented by arugula and parsley.
